Located roughly 10 kilometers northeast of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath ranks among the four crucial holy sites of Buddhism, along with Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, and Kushinagar. Ancient Pali texts refer to this sanctuary as Isipatana (the landing place of sages) and Mrigadava (the deer park). It remains globally famous as the location where Siddhartha Gautama delivered his initial teaching after reaching full enlightenment.
Following his supreme awakening beneath the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya around the 6th century BCE, Buddha journeyed to the quiet groves of Sarnath. Here, he reunited with the five ascetics who had previously abandoned him during his strict penances.
It was to this group that he preached his first sermon, titled the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (The Discourse on Setting the Wheel of Law in Motion). This historic event established three fundamental components of Buddhist philosophy:
The Four Noble Truths: The fundamental diagnosis of human existence, outlining suffering, its underlying causes, its potential end, and the technique to achieve liberation.
The Noble Eightfold Path: The practical "Middle Way" emphasizing right action, ethical living, and focused meditation.
Establishment of the Sangha: The creation of the world's first formal Buddhist monastic order.
1. Dhamek Stupa
This massive cylindrical shrine reaches a height of nearly 43.6 meters with a foundation spanning 28 meters across.
It identifies the traditional location where the Buddha shared his initial teachings.
Originally built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, the structure underwent significant expansion during the Gupta Dynasty, leaving behind delicate geometric and floral relief panels carved directly into the stone facade.
2. Chaukhandi Stupa
Located near the entrance of the archaeological park, this terraced brick mound marks the spot where the Buddha first met his former companions upon reaching Sarnath.
In 1588 CE, a distinct octagonal Islamic turret was added to the top of the stupa by Governor Goverdhan to honor a visit from the Mughal ruler Humayun.
3. Ashoka's Edict Pillar
Erected under Mauryan rule, this polished sandstone column carried royal instructions commanding unity within the monastic order.
The famous Lion Capital that once surmounted this pillar survived intact and is preserved in the Sarnath Archaeological Museum. Its design—four back-to-back Asiatic lions above a wheel of law—was formally adopted as the National Emblem of India.
Between the Mauryan period and the Gupta era, Sarnath developed into a major hub for art, philosophy, and monastic education. The region developed its own artistic style, known for producing graceful, serene sculptures of the Buddha that influenced Asian religious art for centuries.
Though medieval conflicts in the late 12th century left the complex in ruins, major archaeological digs initiated by Sir Alexander Cunningham in the 19th century uncovered extensive monasteries, votive shrines, and administrative buildings.
Today, Sarnath functions both as a protected historic park and a living spiritual site, featuring modern temples built by Buddhist traditions from Thailand, Japan, Tibet, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar.
