  'ANCIENT BUDDHIST SITE OF SARNATH' 45th UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE OF INDIA.  Sarnath stupa and Ancient buddhist remains inscribed as India's 45th UNESCO world heritage site on 25 July 2026 under name of 'Ancient Budhist site of Sarnath'.  'Ancient Budhist site of Sarnath'. Located roughly 10 kilometers northeast of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Sarnath ranks among the four crucial holy sites of Buddhism, along with Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, and Kushinagar. Ancient Pali texts refer to this sanctuary as  Isipatana  (the landing place of sages) and  Mrigadava  (the deer park). It remains globally famous as the location where Siddhartha Gautama delivered his initial teaching after reaching full enlightenment. Somnath is the Jyotirlinga of the first of the sacred 12 Jyotirlingas of India, Somnath is situated on the shore of the Arabian Sea in Saurashtra, Gujarat. Due to its religious importance and natural habitat, lakhs Pilgrimage come here to seek the blessings of Lord Somnatha. The history of construction of Somnath temple is very large, this temple was broken and built many times in history.In history, Mohammad Ghazni, Allauddin Khilji, Mohammad Begada, Aurangzeb looted and destroyed this temple, but every time this temple was built. The first Yadavas of Vallabhi built this Somnath temple in the year of 669 AD.

The first mention of damage to this temple in 625 AD is found in the history of India and the last time Aurangzeb destroyed the temple in 1701 and built a mosque there, later the mosque was relocated and the present temple was built in the year of 1951 after Junagadh State has been merged in India. The construction work of the present temple was started in 1949 under the leadership of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the construction of this temple was completed in 1951 under the leadership of Munshi by collecting donations from the public.

 Trains run daily from Ahmedabad to Somnath. Somnath is a major railway station or Veraval Station which is only 5 km away from Somnath Temple.From Somnath and Veraval the railway will be easily available to major cities of the country. Gujarat State Transport buses run daily to Somnath from Junagadh Rajkot, Porbandar and Ahmedabad. The travelers coming here are also provided with the facility of staying by the Somnath Trust, for which online booking is also available.
